Northwestern Michigan College’s International Affairs Forum continues its 30th season on Thursday, October 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum Center.
Join the discussion as Ambassador (ret.) Susan D. Page addresses the structural difficulties Africa faces for the future, including refugee crises, famine, terrorism, foreign influence by Russia & China, and more. This is an in-person event with online livestream available. All NMC students, faculty, and staff are free to attend.
Amb. Susan D. Page is the Director of the Weiser Diplomacy Center & Professor of Practice in International Diplomacy at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, and Professor from Practice at the University of Michigan Law School. She has deep expertise in international relations, particularly in Africa. Her senior level roles have included Assistant Secretary General/Special Adviser on Rule of Law, Global Focal Point Review Implementation, Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) to the United Nations Mission for Justice Support to Haiti (MINUJUSTH), first U.S. Ambassador to newly independent South Sudan, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires to the African Union, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, key adviser to the peace process that resolved Africa’s longest-running civil war through international mediation, head of rule of law programs for the UN, and a foreign service regional legal advisor and political of ficer in East, Central, and Southern Africa.
Stan Otto, a former senior U.S. diplomat and current IAF Board co-chair, will moderate the discussion. Otto was a senior diplomat in the State Department with 40 years expertise in promoting international cooperation and understanding, including policy planning, negotiating and management in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Prior to the Foreign Service, he was a Fulbright lecturer in Taiwan and taught at universities in Iran and Egypt. He also served in the Peace Corps in Morocco and Cameroon.
This event is open to the public and available to livestream online. Admission is $15 per person or free for students and educators. The event includes a welcome reception with appetizers at 5:30 p.m.

As part of National Voter Registration Day, volunteers from The League of Women Voters of the Grand Traverse Area (LWVGTA) will help new voters register and find their precincts on Tuesday, September 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Timothy J. NMC’s Jazz Big Band will perform at the 9th Annual Leelanau UnCaged Festival on September 30. The Big Band will perform at 5:45 p.m. on Center Stage and will feature an appearance from former NMC Jazz Band directors Mike Hunter and Laurie Sears. Many of the members of NMC’s big Band are working professional musicians in the area with their own groups and are scheduled to perform other sets throughout the day.

NMC’s International Affairs Forum concludes its 29th season on Thursday, June 8, 6:30 PM at the Hagerty Center with a timely discussion on nuclear weapons and nonproliferation. IAF will welcome Thomas Countryman for this in-person event with livestream available.
Thomas Countryman is Chairman of the Board of the Arms Control Association. The ACA, founded in 1972, is a nonpartisan NGO which analyzes key security issues and advises the executive branch, Congress and the public on choices to promote global security and reduce the risk that weapons of mass destruction will be used. Countryman retired from the Senior Foreign Service in January 2017 after 35 years of service. At that time, he served simultaneously as acting Undersecretary for Arms Control, and as Assistant Secretary for International Security and Nonproliferation, a position he held since September 2011. The ISN Bureau leads the US effort to prevent the spread of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. After serving in Belgrade, Washington and Cairo, he advised Ambassador Albright on Middle East affairs at the US Mission to the United Nations, and was Director for Near East affairs at the National Security Council.
Jack Segal, a former senior U.S. diplomat and former IAF Board co-chair, will moderate the discussion. Segal has had a long career in arms control and nonproliferation. He served at the NSC as Director for Nonproliferation and Export Controls from 1999-2000. Prior to that, in Moscow, he was responsible for implementing a variety of arms control agreements. From 1986-87, he served as a State Department representative to the strategic weapons talks of the START negotiations with the USSR in Geneva. While there, he drafted the Agreement on Nuclear Risk Reduction with the USSR which was signed in 1987 and which continues to be honored by the U.S. and Russia today despite the current state of our relationship.

On Saturday, May 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Dennos Museum Center will be hosting the Spring Art Market. Come celebrate spring and moms at the Dennos with fun museum programming! Over 20 Michigan artists who work in a range of media including ceramics, jewelry, printmaking, painting, glass, metal, mixed media, fiber and wood will be selling their pieces while the museum is open.
Join us for a tour with the director, a Mother’s Day card making project, Michigan Legacy Art Park’s community art project, live art demonstrations and a pianist playing in the galleries during this FREE DAY at the museum.
