The International Affairs Forum at Northwestern Michigan College presents a discussion with Jack Segal, a retired senior US diplomat and former co-chair of the International Affairs Forum who served at the US Embassy in Israel as Counselor for Political/Military Affairs during the first Intifada and the Gulf War. Segal will discuss Israel’s new coalition government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Far-right factions of the new coalition threaten to destabilize Israel, Palestine and the greater region. Put on your glad rags and join this Roaring 20s extravaganza! On Friday, January 27, the Student Success Ambassador team will be hosting Gala to Give — a networking event to connect students with alumni, local businesses, and the greater Traverse City community. The event will be held from 7–10 p.m. at The Hagerty Center on NMC’s Great Lakes Campus.
The event will celebrate NMC’s connections with the community while benefiting the College for Kids scholarship fund so that all kids in our community might have the opportunity to experience these great programs.
The night will be filled with live music, mocktails, hors d’oeuvres and desserts with raffle prize drawings throughout the evening.
Tickets are $15 for current students and $30 for alumni and guests. Sponsorship opportunities for businesses are also available. Purchase your tickets at nmc.edu/gala.

The Dennos Museum is hosting Observing with NASA – Family Day on Saturday, December 3. Enjoy free admission to the museum and make your own astronomical images using the Observing with NASA Kiosk in the Discovery Gallery.
At 1 p.m. join the Astronomical Society to make a comet and learn about moon phases.
At 2 p.m. Jerry Dobek, head of the Astronomy and Science Departments at Northwestern Michigan College, will lead a presentation on the Observing With NASA Kiosk and the science behind the imaging used by the Hubble Telescope in the MIlliken Auditorium.
About Jerry Dobek: Dr. Jerry Dobek is a professional astrophysicist and faculty instructor at Northwestern Michigan College. His research interests are in variable stars and dark material, which he conducts from his own observatory north of Traverse City, Michigan. Jerry is also the site coordinator / site director for Project ASTRO and Project Family ASTRO for the Michigan and Upper Wisconsin sites, and serves as the regional Solar System Ambassador for NASA / JPL. Jerry is a founding member of and the regional representative for the International Dark-Sky Association and has been instrumental in writing lighting ordinances for townships and counties in Michigan as well as several other states.

The International Affairs Forum continues on Tuesday, November 8 at 11 a.m. EST. This virtual event will focus on Ukraine, Russia, and NATO with Ambassador John Kornblum, former U.S. assistant secretary of state for European affairs and former U.S. ambassador to Germany.
Ambassdor Kornblum has a deep record of service in the United States and Europe both as a diplomat and as a businessman. He is recognized as an expert on U.S.-European political and economic relations, in particular in Central and Eastern Europe. He served as the U.S. ambassador to Germany from 1997 to 2001. Before that, he was U.S. assistant secretary of state for European affairs in the Clinton administration – a critical phase for Europe and Russia just after the collapse of the Soviet Union. He was special envoy for the Dayton Peace Process, U.S. ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Process), deputy U.S. ambassador to NATO, and U.S. minister and deputy commandant of forces in divided Berlin. Kornblum was born in Detroit, MI. He earned a B.A. from Michigan State University in 1964 and has been the recipient of many awards, including a Knights Cross of the Order of Merit from Germany and an Order of Merit from Austria. He will connect with IAF from his home in Germany.
Jack Segal will moderate the discussion. Segal is a former senior U.S. diplomat and former IAF Board co-chair. In the Clinton administration, he was the National Security Council director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia, and served ten years as senior political advisor to the NATO Commander where he was responsible for Afghanistan policy. He is an active instructor at NMC Extended Education on a variety of global affairs topics.
This virtual event will be available to livestream on Zoom. Registration is required with a suggested donation of $10.

On Tuesday, November 1, community network We Fight will host its second “Elevate Northern Michigan: A Youth Mental Health Summit for Young Leaders – and Those Who Love Them.”
Elevate Northern Michigan is a quarterly summit series focusing on boosting knowledge regarding psychology, neuroscience, practical well-being tools, and leadership skills related to mental health. The 90-minute event will consist of three workshops with local experts:
- Dr. Michael Kern, Ph.D: School Psychologist at Interlochen Center for the Arts
- Meg Mertaugh-Graber, M.Ed., MSW, LMSW Clinical, LICSW: Founder of Care-O-Van, PLLC & AVEC Care Farm
- Jessie Perez: Family Navigator at National Alliance for Mental Illness Grand Traverse
Registration is free but required as space is limited.
All are welcome at the summit — particularly young people aged 16-24 and those who love them. No previous training or engagement with We Fight is required. The event begins at 1 p.m., and will take place at Northwestern Michigan College’s Innovation Center in Room 106/107.

We Fight for Northern Michigan’s Youth Mental Health, or “We Fight,” was founded in December 2021 as an initiative of Traverse City-based social change agency Good Works Lab. Since its founding, over 630+ people who care have committed to protecting youth mental health in Northern Michigan by leveraging the Surgeon General’s Youth Mental Health advisory.
