One of the nation’s most respected authorities on China,\u00a0Dr. David Shambaugh, will present “China in the 21st Century: Are We Ready?” at 6 p.m. June 5<\/span><\/span> at the City Opera House in downtown Traverse City.<\/p>\n

Shambaugh is a professor and director of the\u00a0China Policy Program at The George Washington University,<\/a>\u00a0as well as a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.He is the author of numerous books and publications including his\u00a0highly-acclaimed 2013\u00a0release,\u00a0China Goes Global: The Partial Power<\/em>,\u00a0selected by The Economist, Foreign Affairs and Bloomberg News as one of the best books of the year. Dr. Shambaugh received his\u00a0Ph.D. in political science from the University of Michigan and has family ties on the Old Mission Peninsula dating back to 1902.<\/p>\n

Shambaugh’s presentation kicks off “China: Competitor or Partner?” the International Affairs Forum’s two-day conference on China, which continues with roundtables, panel discussions and lectures all day Friday June 6<\/span><\/span>, at the Hagerty Center.\u00a0With\u00a0<\/b>more than 1.3 billion people and an economy that will eclipse that of the United States in a few years, China is expected to play an increasingly prominent role in this century. The conference will take up the question of what this means for the U.S. in terms of business, political, educational and cultural ties, including here in northern Michigan.<\/p>\n
