The proclamation urged people to provide understanding, encouragement, and opportunities to help people with disabilities to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFull potential\u201d \u2014 these words should have new meaning for us now, as we embrace NMC\u2019s new Vision, which states, \u201cWe aspire to be a global community where all learners <strong>unlock their full potential<\/strong>.\u201d March gives us the opportunity to focus on this underrepresented population and to support the inclusion of these individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Did you know, <strong>26 percent<\/strong> (one in 4) of adults in the United States have some type of disability?<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can I do to support inclusion for those with disabilities?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Educate yourself on the topic of disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>There are four major types of disabilities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physical<\/li>\n<li>Developmental<\/li>\n<li>Behavioral or emotional, and<\/li>\n<li>Sensory impaired disorders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are some examples of common disabilities?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Acquired brain injury<\/li>\n<li>Autism spectrum disorder<\/li>\n<li>Deaf or hard of hearing<\/li>\n<li>Intellectual disability<\/li>\n<li>Mental health conditions<\/li>\n<li>Physical disability<\/li>\n<li>Vision Impairment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<strong>How can you support inclusion in the office, classroom or online?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Begin with the basics. This month we are taking extra steps to raise awareness and to support people with disabilities and to celebrate their contributions to our communities and society as a whole!<\/p>\n<p>While there has been significant and positive change in the decades since, many challenges remain for this vulnerable population.
