The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present Spring Break Stitching<\/i>: Explore Contemporary Quilts<\/i>, a workshop for youth, grades 3-8. On Monday, March 31, 10:00am \u2013 3:00pm, children in grades 3-5 will be able to learn about the history of quilting while trying their hand at contemporary techniques. On the following day, Tuesday, April 1, 10:00am \u2013 3:00pm, children in grades 6-8 will do the same. The Spring Break Stitching workshop will introduce youth to the world of quilting in a fun and unique way. Students will learn about the history of quilts in America with an emphasis on the emergence and growth of contemporary quilt-making. They will have an opportunity to examine contemporary quilts made by Gwen Marston, in the exhibition, Gwen Marston: Contemporary Quilts<\/i><\/b>, as well as traditional and contemporary quilts from the instructor\u2019s collection. Students will make their own contemporary quilt to explore shape, color, line, texture, design, and value. They will use basic materials and tools typically used in making quilts.<\/p>\n

Instructor Susan Walker is a quilter and educator currently residing in Interlochen, MI. She has taught people of all ages the skills and techniques needed to be successful quilters, while encouraging an appreciation of the art form.<\/p>\n

Students are encouraged to bring:<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fabric scraps<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Small items for tracing shapes<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ruler<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fibers (ribbon, yarn, heavy thread, embroider floss, string, twine, etc.)<\/p>\n

–\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Embellishments (buttons, beads, small light-weight items easily glued onto fabric, etc.)<\/p>\n
