{"id":8163,"date":"2014-03-07T15:53:39","date_gmt":"2014-03-07T20:53:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/?p=8163"},"modified":"2014-03-10T15:53:48","modified_gmt":"2014-03-10T19:53:48","slug":"five-win-nisod-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/?p=8163","title":{"rendered":"Five win NISOD award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NMC faculty and staff teaching biology, English, philosophy and writing have been named NMC&#8217;s 2014 winners of the NISOD award.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Communications instructors Judy Chu and Janet Lively, humanities instructor Mella McCormick, science\/math instructor Nicholas Roster and Writing Center coordinator Megan Ward have been named recipients of the award for teaching and leadership excellence in higher education.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chu<\/strong>\u00a0joined the faculty in 2001 after two years as an adjunct. She was commended for both her classroom instruction and her leadership on a curriculum committee focused on designing coursework for NMC&#8217;s most academically challenged students.<\/li>\n<li><strong>McCormick<\/strong>\u00a0joined the faculty in 2008. She was noted for her work creating new hybrid courses that take the best of the traditional face-to-face format and combine that with the best of the online format.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Roster<\/strong>\u00a0joined the faculty in 2007 after two years as an adjunct. He was commended for being at the forefront of using new teaching and assessment techniques that are shown to be beneficial to student learning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lively<\/strong>\u00a0joined the faculty in 2010 after five years as an adjunct.\u00a0<strong>Ward<\/strong>\u00a0joined the NMC staff in 2008. She has also taught as an adjunct since 2009. They were cited jointly for their work co-directing NMC&#8217;s first-year writing program, which offers more than 100 sections of English per year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NMC is one of more than 700 community college members of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nisod.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">NISOD, the National Institute for Staff &amp; Organizational Development.<\/a>\u00a0Affiliated with the University of Texas at Austin, NISOD has made the teaching excellence awards to faculty at member institutions since 1989.
