{"id":79749,"date":"2022-01-20T16:20:03","date_gmt":"2022-01-20T21:20:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/?p=79749"},"modified":"2022-01-27T17:36:53","modified_gmt":"2022-01-27T22:36:53","slug":"covid-protocols-for-instructors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/?p=79749","title":{"rendered":"COVID-19 protocols for instructors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear Instructors,<\/p>\n<p>With Spring semester underway and the prevalence of the omicron variant in our region, we\u2019re experiencing an increase in reported COVID-19 cases in our campus community. In an effort to maintain a safe learning environment and improve the efficiency of contact tracing, we\u2019d like to review our current protocols for what to do when a student or instructor tests positive:<\/p>\n<h3>If a student tests positive for COVID-19<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Report all positive (student) cases through NMC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?NorthwesternMichiganCollege\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Red Flag<\/a> incident reporting system:\n<ul>\n<li>Check \u201cHealth Concerns\u201d in the questions section.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Please include:\n<ul>\n<li>The best contact information for the student (cell and\/or email)<\/li>\n<li>The room number of your class<\/li>\n<li>The time class met<\/li>\n<li>Any other information related to unusually close or lengthy contact with additional students (i.e. lab partner)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Please ask the student to contact NMC Health Services to expedite reporting and follow-up.<\/li>\n<li>To maintain student privacy, we strongly discourage notifying an entire classroom if a student in your classroom tests positive.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Health Services is responsible for contact tracing, focusing on close contacts since they are most at risk. Should the instructor choose to notify an entire class of a case in their classroom, it\u2019s very important not to identify the student who tested positive. Exclude their name and other personally identifiable information.<\/li>\n<li>If Health Services is made aware of or discovers a student case before an instructor, they will notify the instructor as soon as possible.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>If Health Services identifies multiple classroom cases, they will notify the instructor and arrange a meeting to assess the need to pivot to virtual instruction or cancel for a period of time.<\/li>\n<li>Instructors should contact Health Services immediately (via the <a href=\"https:\/\/cm.maxient.com\/reportingform.php?NorthwesternMichiganCollege\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Red Flag<\/a> process outlined above) if multiple student cases are discovered by the faculty member first.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Instructors should then follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmc.edu\/student-services\/health-services\/corona-virus\/protocols-for-multiple-cases.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guidelines for &#8220;Multiple Classroom Cases&#8221;<\/a> in determining whether to temporarily shift the course online.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>If an instructor tests positive for COVID-19<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The instructor should notify their supervisor and Human Resources (include Hollie DeWalt and Mark Liebling).<\/li>\n<li>Coursework may be temporarily cancelled, adjusted or shifted online at the discretion of the instructor during quarantine (generally 5 days unless symptoms persist).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Rapid testing resources<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Health Services provides free rapid testing services for all students.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Health Services also provides testing services to faculty and staff who experience on-the-job exposures.
