{"id":7162,"date":"2013-12-17T17:18:35","date_gmt":"2013-12-17T22:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/?p=7162"},"modified":"2013-12-27T14:58:15","modified_gmt":"2013-12-27T19:58:15","slug":"this-month-in-history-december","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/?p=7162","title":{"rendered":"This month in history: December"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Check out what was happening at NMC 25 and 50 years ago!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>50 Years Ago:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fifteen nursing students at NMC became the first to complete the Associate Degree course in professional nursing.\u00a0 They were given school pins at a special ceremony at the Student Center (West Hall).<\/li>\n<li>Women from AWS (Associated Women Students) prepared their annual Christmas Chocolate, scheduling it on Dec. 16 as a pre-basketball game event.\u00a0 They served hot cocoa &amp; cookies in the dorm.\u00a0 Mid-December was during the week before exams since NMC was still on terms rather than semesters.\u00a0\u00a0 (See photo below)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/AWS-Christmas-Chocolate-1963.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-7163\" alt=\"AWS (Associated Women Students) Christmas Chocolate, 1963\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/AWS-Christmas-Chocolate-1963-1024x795.jpg\" width=\"614\" height=\"477\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/AWS-Christmas-Chocolate-1963-1024x795.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/AWS-Christmas-Chocolate-1963-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/AWS-Christmas-Chocolate-1963.jpg 1594w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>25 Years Ago:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NMC\u2019s Aviation Dept., with matching funds from the government, purchased a Flight Simulator.\u00a0 The screen\u2019s default program showed the Cherry Capital Airport\u2019s runway with its actual elevation of 624 feet above sea level, but the computer could be set for major airports all over the country.\u00a0 Students had to reserve time to spend on the simulator, and working pilots could rent time and use it for re-training.\u00a0 (See photo below of Bob Buttleman, Aviator Director, demonstrating the new NMC Flight Simulator \u2013 Record-Eagle photo).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Buttleman-flight-simulator-1988resized.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-7164\" alt=\"Buttleman -
