{"id":57733,"date":"2020-10-29T12:35:04","date_gmt":"2020-10-29T16:35:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/?p=57733"},"modified":"2020-10-29T12:36:52","modified_gmt":"2020-10-29T16:36:52","slug":"sad-news-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/?p=57733","title":{"rendered":"Sad News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-57734\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/stephen-ballance-photo.jpg\" alt=\"Stephen Ballance photo\" width=\"170\" height=\"220\" \/>Longtime NMC instructor and Art Department head Stephen Ballance passed away on October 21, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Steve joined the NMC faculty in 1971 as a part-time instructor of photography, taught Photography and Art Appreciation from 1981 through 2000 and served as the head of the Art Department from 1986 through 2000, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/obituaries.record-eagle.com\/obituary\/stephen-ballance-1080614038\">his obituary<\/a>. He also headed the Physical Education Department from 1981 through 1986 and taught sailing to Great Lakes Maritime Academy students. He considered his work with his students as his most important accomplishment.<\/p>\n<p>At Steve&#8217;s request, a private memorial service will be held in the spring. Recognitions of Steve&#8217;s contribution to the community should be directed to the Paul &amp; Delphine Welch Art Department Scholarship at Northwestern Michigan College, 1701 E.
