{"id":48206,"date":"2022-12-19T10:00:03","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T15:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/?p=48206"},"modified":"2022-12-19T10:05:24","modified_gmt":"2022-12-19T15:05:24","slug":"emergency-management-suspicious-packages-and-envelopes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nmc.edu\/?p=48206","title":{"rendered":"Emergency Management: Suspicious Packages And Envelopes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Identifying Suspicious Packages and Envelopes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some characteristics of suspicious packages and envelopes include the following: <\/strong><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inappropriate or unusual labeling<\/li>\n<li>Excessive postage<\/li>\n<li>Handwritten or poorly typed addresses<\/li>\n<li>Misspellings of common words<\/li>\n<li>Strange return address or no return address<\/li>\n<li>Incorrect titles or title without a name<\/li>\n<li>Not addressed to a specific person<\/li>\n<li>Marked with restrictions, such as \u201cPersonal,\u201d \u201cConfidential,\u201d or \u201cDo not x-ray\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Marked with any threatening language<\/li>\n<li>Postmarked from a city or state that does not match the return address<\/li>\n<li>Appearance<\/li>\n<li>Powdery substance felt through or appearing on the package or envelope<\/li>\n<li>Oily stains, discolorations, or odor<\/li>\n<li>Lopsided or uneven envelope<\/li>\n<li>Excessive packaging material such as masking tape, string, etc.=<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other suspicious signs <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Excessive weight<\/li>\n<li>Ticking sound<\/li>\n<li>Protruding wires or aluminum foil<\/li>\n<li>If a package or envelope appears suspicious, DO NOT OPEN IT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Handling of Suspicious Packages or Envelopes <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not shake or empty the contents of any suspicious package or envelope.<\/li>\n<li>Do not carry the package or envelope, show it to others or allow others to examine it.<\/li>\n<li>Put the package or envelope down on a stable surface; do not sniff, touch, taste, or look closely at it or at any contents which may have spilled.<\/li>\n<li>Alert others in the area about the suspicious package or envelope. Leave the area, close any doors, and take actions to prevent others from entering the area. If possible, shut off the ventilation system.<\/li>\n<li>WASH hands with soap and water to prevent spreading potentially infectious material to face or skin.
