The negative\u00a0imagery\u2013found on postcards, license plates, games, souvenirs and costumes\u2013promoted stereotyping against such groups as Asian-Americans, Hispanics,\u00a0Jews and poor whites, as well as those who are \u201cother\u201d in terms of body\u00a0type or sexual orientation.<\/p>\n<p>This exhibit opens at the Dennos Museum Center on Sunday, January 13, and was inspired by the words of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.,\u00a0\u201cInjustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere &#8230; Whatever affects one\u00a0directly, affects all indirectly.\u201d The goal is to use objects of intolerance to\u00a0teach tolerance and offer opportunities for dialogue and action.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>COMMUNITY EVENT RECEPTION<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">The DTE Energy-Foundation invites you to a reception for this compelling exhibition,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Thursday, January 17, 2013, 5:30pm at the Dennos Museum Center \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Presentation (immediately following):\u00a07pm, Milliken Auditorium: Dr. David Pilgrim, exhibit curator<\/p>\n<p>This exhibit is the first in a series of related events spearheaded by groups in the community\u00a0under the auspices of the Traverse City Human Rights Commission associated\u00a0with observances of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>UPCOMING MILLIKEN AUDITORIUM EVENTS<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 13px; line-height: 19px;\">Prom Night in Mississippi by Paul Saltzman<br \/>\nJanuary 24, 2013, 7pm, free<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Powerbroker by Bonnie Boswell<br \/>\nFebruary 7, 2013, 7pm, WCMU Community Cinema, free<\/p>\n<p>Leslie McCurdy &amp; The Spirit of Harriet Tubman<br \/>\nFebruary 28, 2013, 7pm, all seats $10 (Tickets: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dennosmuseum.org\">dennosmuseum.org<\/a> or 231.995.1553)<\/p>\n<p>For a calendar of community events in this series: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dennosmuseum.org\/tolerance\">dennosmuseum.org\/tolerance<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THEM: Images of Separation, is a traveling exhibition showcasing items from popular culture used to stereotype different groups.
