I would like to start out by paying tribute to a couple of dear friends to both NMC and the community, Art Schmuckal and Helen Milliken.<\/p>\n

Thank you all for everything you do in pursuit of \u201cKeeping Learning at the Center.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Activities of Note: Faculty and Staff\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

This section recognizes the good work being done and linkages to the Strategic Agenda, Strategic Directions and Goals are provided where possible.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2022 NMC\u2019s PR and Marketing department has earned two Medallion Awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR). The awards are in the Postcard Series and Promotional Video categories and will be presented at the NCMPR national conference in Chicago in March. (SD4)<\/p>\n

\u2022 Our second new TV spot has started its run. This one features Jonathan Madrigal, an international business student and president of the International Student Club. This ad will now run in even rotation with our first ad. (SD4)<\/p>\n

\u2022 NMC\u2019s new Outreach Services organized a Veterans Day Tribute hosting more than 60 area veterans for a breakfast in the West Hall Northwoods Cafeteria. At 8:50 a.m., NMC faculty and staff lined the sidewalk to thank our veterans as they walked to a flag raising ceremony by the local VFW Color Guard. The Traverse City Central High School marching band was on hand to perform the Star Spangled Banner, and the Coast Guard did a flyover. A cake and coffee reception honoring Veterans was also held in the West Hall lobby from 12:30-2:30 p.m. (SD3, SD4)<\/p>\n

\u2022 The entire NMC community participated in being one of four institutions in the United States to host delegates from colleges across China as part of the AACC and China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) sponsored Vocational Education and Leadership Training (VELT) program. Throughout their two week stay in Traverse City, the six Chinese presidents and vice presidents met with various academic departments, student service areas, leadership groups, and students at NMC to learn more about how a community college functions in the United States. Special thank you to Lindsey Dickenson, Chris Weber, and Rita Kucera for the extensive coordination of this visit, scheduling of activities, and chauffeuring. (SD1)<\/p>\n

\u2022 The Foundation’s new Annual Report will mailed in December. The report features listings of several thousand donors from last fiscal year that support NMC programs and scholarships. We have also dedicated a page to remember Art Schmuckal, Mike Dennos, and Helen Milliken. (SD4)<\/p>\n

\u2022 The NMC Giving Tree program will provide Christmas cheer to approximately 30 NMC students and their families this year. One student said: “Thank you! We are grateful and\u00a0thankful for your help. Gracie will have a Christmas with gifts. Thank you again for the extra Love.”<\/p>\n

Activities of Note: Tim\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I apologize for the length of time that has passed since my last update. It has been an extremely busy month!<\/p>\n

\u2022 Attended the monthly executive group lunch hosted by TCAPS superintendent Steve Cousins at their data center on Cass Road.<\/p>\n

\u2022 NMC was well represented at the annual Gladhander event. Bob and Nancy Brick, Bill Myers and Kristin Rock, Doug and Ginny Bishop, and Cheryl and David Follette joined Nancy and me at the NMC table.<\/p>\n

\u2022 We welcomed the arrival of the VELT delegation from China on Sunday, October 28, with a reception and dinner at Lobdell\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\u2022 I traveled to Lansing for the MPSERS Board meeting on November 1.<\/p>\n

\u2022 I returned from Lansing on November 1 in time to attend the Munson Healthcare Annual Meeting at Milliken Auditorium. I then attended the Munson Healthcare Finance Committee the next day on Friday, November 2.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Bob Brick and I had lunch with Dan Denawetz on November 7. Dan is with a consulting and entrepreneur coaching organization entitled RECON Management Systems.<\/p>\n

\u2022 On November 12 I met with McKeel Hagerty to talk about ways in which we might work together to benefit our community.<\/p>\n

\u2022 I also met with Trevor Tkach to discuss collaborative opportunities to provide events that celebrate local agriculture and epicurean talent during the 2013 Cherry Festival.<\/p>\n

\u2022 I traveled back down to Lansing for the November 18 MCCA Presidents Committee meeting.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Nancy and I, as well as several trustees, attended many events with our Chinese visitors during their two-week visit, ending with a nice farewell dinner at the Museum. It was a busy and productive visit with many NMC departments providing excellent presentations. A special event to mention was the generosity of Diana Milock and Chris Dennos for hosting the delegation and several staff members in their homes for appetizers and dinner Sunday evening. This visit was truly a learning experience for both the VELT delegation and NMC. I believe that lifelong relationships have been established through this visit.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Last week I traveled to San Jose, California, to spend a day with officials of the other colleges in the United States that were visited by VELT delegations.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Rebecca Teahen and I had a teleconference meeting with our Foundation consultant Kathy Cole yesterday to review her report and findings. She will make a presentation at the December Foundation Meeting.<\/p>\n

\u2022 I have now met with all but one of the NMC employee leadership groups. My agenda is to listen, answer questions and stay in contact. I believe the meetings were beneficial and I will continue this on a semester by semester basis.<\/p>\n

Miscellaneous\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2022 The successful NMC Board of Trustees candidates from the November 6 election are incumbent Douglas Bishop and Kennard Weaver. I want to thank Jay Hooper for his 12 years of committed service to NMC. During his tenure Jay served as Chair, chaired and\u00a0served on multiple committees and has always been committed to the welfare of NMC, our employees and our community. Please thank him for his service when you see him.<\/p>\n

\u2022 We extend a welcome to Kennard Weaver who will be publicly sworn in at the January 28 annual meeting. We are in the process of planning an orientation session as we have always done for new Board members.<\/p>\n
