TRAVERSE CITY — Northwestern Michigan College welcomes the community to celebrate its new $8.8-million, 135-bed student housing and fitness center Monday, August 21. There will be a ribbon cutting at 1 p.m. followed by public tours until 6 p.m.<\/p>\n

The new North Hall<\/a> features quad style suites with shared kitchen and living space. It is located on NMC’s Front Street main campus near the Dogwood and Elmwood parking lots.<\/p>\n

North Hall is one of several on-campus residential community options. This is the first student housing built at NMC in more than 40 years. The student apartments<\/a> were constructed in 1973 and the East Hall dormitory<\/a> was built in 1965.<\/p>\n

“Historically NMC was a leader in providing students with access to affordable housing options in the decades after the community founded this institution,” President Timothy J. Nelson said. “We recognize to continue to meet the needs of our learners both today and into the future we must break down barriers to education, including something as fundamental as housing. Research has shown students who live on campus persist and complete educational goals at a higher level. We are dedicated to helping them achieve their goals.”<\/p>\n

Student housing at NMC has been at capacity for four years. North Hall is currently more than 90 percent full for the fall semester. The center has also been designed with a flexible format where sections could be used for workforce development housing in off-peak times.<\/p>\n

The project is self funded.<\/p>\n

Spence Brothers oversaw construction of North Hall. The company was awarded the project after a competitive bid process.<\/p>\n

The new North Hall is one of several major construction projects currently at the college including an expansion and renovation of the Dennos Museum Center<\/a> and the recently approved West Hall Innovation Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n
