Ronnie Malley – oud\/guitar\/vocals<\/p><\/div>\n

The Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College will present Caravanserai: American Voices \u2013 A Place Where Cultures Meet<\/strong> on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 8 PM in Milliken Auditorium. Tickets are $20 advance, $23 at the door and $17 for museum members plus ticket fees. Caravanserai: American Voices presents acclaimed Muslim-American performers sharing contemporary creative expressions. The program features the first-ever pairing of the unique sounds of Palestinian-American multi-instrumentalist Ronnie Malley<\/strong> along with the soul stylings of celebrated Indian-American vocalist Zeshan Bagewadi<\/strong>. Their innovative, cross-cultural musical styles reflect the diversity of influences, languages, and cultures that infuse the American immigrant experience.<\/p>\n

Ronnie Malley<\/strong> combines multiple global music traditions \u2013 Arab,\u00a0Turkish, Balkan, South Asian \u2013 with his American jazz and rock roots to create a sound celebration that has led him to a diverse career. Born and raised in Chicago, he began his musical journey playing in American and Middle Eastern rock bands and\u00a0traditional ensembles.<\/p>\n

Ronnie developed a talent for performance and musical direction that led to his appearance in seminal productions at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. and Chicago\u2019s acclaimed Goodman Theater. He has collaborated with major international world-music stars, including Afro-Peruvian folk legends, Rodolfo Munoz and Miguel Ballermos,\u00a0renowned Polish classical and jazz artist Grazyna Auguscik, Senegalese artist and poet Modou Gaye, and many notable performers from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia.\u00a0Ronnie also composes scores and original songs for multiple film and\u00a0theater\u00a0projects, teaches Arab and folk music at Old Town School of Folk Music and the\u00a0Chicago Academy for the Arts\u00a0and tours internationally as a performer with Allos Musica, Lamajamal, Mucca Pazza, Duzan Ensemble and as a member of the University of Chicago Middle Eastern Music Ensemble.”<\/p>\n

Zeshan Bagewadi<\/strong> is an acclaimed classically-trained opera singer from Chicago who stretches the boundaries of his cultural and musical influences to create a unique voice that defies categorization. Zeshan is a genre defying virtuoso who is as comfortable playing the lead in Mozart\u2019s The Magic Flute<\/em> as he is singing qawwali or jazz standards or leading the indie-rock band Zamin.<\/p>\n

Zeshan received his Master’s Degree in Voice\u00a0and Literature from Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music in\u00a02011. Throughout his career, he has performed throughout the United States, Italy, and India, singing in 11 different languages. Zeshan is now involved in both solo and collaborative projects and will travel to Pakistan in the spring of 2016 to perform at the Music Mela festival. His latest project is\u00a0Dastaan-e-Yaari<\/em>\u00a0(A Tale of Friendship), the first ever Hindi-Urdu song cycle for voice and piano.<\/p>\n

In the United States, the children of immigrants find artistic expressions steeped in two worlds. Muslim-American musicians are influenced just as much by jazz, rock, and the blues as they are by Arab maqam, North African rhythms, Sufi poetry, and South Asian qawwali. Backed by a talented band of fellow multi-instrumentalists, Ronnie Malley and Zeshan Bagewadi will lead a collaborative musical exploration that brings these worlds together.<\/p>\n

Caravanserai: American Voices \u2013 A Place Where Cultures Meet <\/strong>concert will be the concluding event in a week long residency (Feb 1-6) in Traverse City supported by Arts Midwest and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. The residency will offer programs in area schools that celebrate global diversity with performances by dynamic Muslim-American artists. The goal of the Caravanserai project is to map a new cultural Silk Road through America, building bridges to a better tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Teachers and community organizations who wish to host residency events with the performers should contact Jason Dake, Curator of Education at the Dennos Museum Center at 231-995-1029.<\/p>\n

The Dennos concert season is made possible with support from the Robert T and Ruth Haidt Trust and Osterlin Performance Endowment, the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs with media support from WNMC 90.7and TV 29&8. Housing for our performers is provided by the Cambria Suites.<\/p>\n

The Dennos Museum Center is open daily 10 AM to 5 PM, Thursdays until 8 PM and Sundays 1-5 PM. Admission is $6.00 adults, $4.00 for children and free to museum members.
