Using a multi-media approach to demonstrate respect, comfort and awareness, the exhibit offers suggestions for becoming disability allies and educators.<\/p>\n<p>Students, faculty, staff and the community are encouraged to experience <em>The Ability Exhibit<\/em> <strong><span data-term=\"goog_2040256618\">October 18-20, 2015<\/span><\/strong>. On<span data-term=\"goog_2040256619\">October 18<\/span>, The Ability Exhibit will be highlighted as part of <strong>The Big Draw-Grand Traverse<\/strong>, with a related art project and free admission.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALLIES FOR INCLUSION \u2013 DRAWING FOR ALL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-term=\"goog_2040256620\">Sunday, October 18, 2015<\/span> \u2013 <span data-term=\"goog_2040256621\">1:00pm \u2013 4:00pm<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dennos Museum Center, Traverse City<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Join Dennos staff and volunteers and partner ACT-GT for a mini-exhibition titled <em>Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit<\/em>.<em>The Ability Exhibit<\/em> is a traveling interactive display designed to develop allies for people with disabilities. After viewing the exhibit, visit the art room to tell your story through picture. Free admission supported by ACT-GT.<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dennosmuseum.org\/big-draw\">dennosmuseum.org\/big-draw<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u>The 25th\u00a0Anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA)<\/u><\/p>\n<p>It has been twenty-five years since the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 and over forty years since the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Both of these laws protect against discrimination of people with disabilities by requiring equal access to employment, education, goods and services.<\/p>\n<p>Americans have progressed in their attitudes and behaviors toward people with disabilities; however, there remain questions and concerns about appropriate communication, comfort level, and inclusive practices.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to interacting with individuals with disabilities, people ask, &#8220;What should I do?&#8221; How should I respond?&#8221; &#8220;Is it okay to say that?&#8221; &#8220;How can I become an ally?&#8221; Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit will attempt to answer some of these questions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><u>About <em>Allies For Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit<\/em><\/u><\/p>\n<p><em>Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit<\/em> was created by Saint Louis University (SLU) graduate students in the Disability in Higher Education and Society course under the direction of their instructor, Karen Myers, PhD. &#8220;I was so inspired by [graduate student] Anne Marie Carroll&#8217;s initiative that I formed a team of students to take her idea to the next level,&#8221; said Myers.<\/p>\n<p>Evolving from a class project into a sophisticated exhibit, Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit debuted at SLU on October 27, 2010.\u00a0 &#8220;More than 150 students, faculty, staff, and community members attended the unveiling, timed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Americans With Disabilities Act\u201d (Karen Myers in Business Officer, March, 2011).<\/p>\n<p><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<p>If you would like more information about <em>Allies for Inclusion: The Ability Exhibit<\/em>, please visit our website at<a href=\"http:\/\/slu.edu\/theabilityexhibit\">slu.edu\/theabilityexhibit<\/a> or email Alisha Abbott at <strong><a href=\"mailto:aabbott7@slu.edu\">aabbott7@slu.edu<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Dennos Museum Center is open daily <span data-term=\"goog_2040256622\">10 AM to 5 PM<\/span>, Thursdays until <span data-term=\"goog_2040256623\">8 PM<\/span>, and Sundays <span data-term=\"goog_2040256624\">1-5 PM<\/span>.
