Colleagues,

In attempt to better-understand the unique challenges that student veterans face in college, NMC’s Student Veterans of America (SVA), in conjunction with NMC’s Military & Veteran Services, will be sponsoring a webinar on Thursday, February 25 from 12:45pm-2:00pm in NMC’s Oleson Center. In addition to the webinar, hear first-hand from our NMC combat veterans on their experience at NMC; a veteran panel will be available for Q&A and free pizza will also be provided.

If interested, please RSVP to Scott Frederick (sfrederick@nmc.edu) by 5 p.m. on February 24. Watching it free from your office is also an option by registering at the link here: http://go.kognito.com/DavidChrisinger

Since 2002, nearly one million veterans have entered college upon completion of their military service and have brought valuable life and leadership experience with them. However, transitioning from combat to college presents its own unique challenges. Many veterans report that going from a regimented environment to a looser college setting can be jarring. Others feel isolated due to the lack of military cultural competency among faculty, staff and fellow students. Understanding challenges faced by student veterans and providing the proper support is critical to their mental well-being and academic success.

David Chrisinger, a Communication Specialist, Veteran Transition Expert and the managing editor of a website, Stronger at the Broken Places, seeks to reveal unique challenges faced by student veterans in his book See Me for Who I Am. The book brings together twenty short stories written by student veterans at University of Wisconsin in which they relate their transition experiences with thoughtfulness, humor and honesty.

Kognito will host Mr. Chrisinger in Stories from Student Veterans: a free webinar where he will relay some of their stories, speak about why military competency is necessary on campus, and offer best practices to create a more supportive culture and provide the tools they need to succeed in college.

This webinar is perfect for all higher education faculty and staff who wish to gain further insight into the transition challenges faced by student veterans.

Best,

Scott Herzberg
