Here is an informal account of the Northwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees meeting Monday, November 23, 2015.

The NMC Board of Trustees met for its regularly scheduled meeting at the Oleson Center.

The Trustees heard a report on plans for a new major for the BSMT, the Power Systems Program major from Stephen Siciliano and Jerry Achenbach.

The board learned more about the recent visit to the Yellow River Conservancy by Marguerite Cotto, Chris Weber, Ed Bailey and Hans VanSumeren.

Vicki Cook gave a report on sensitive information which showed no incidents.

The Board heard regular reports on enrollment, financials, policy committee, ACCT 2015 Leadership conference, the NMC Foundation, legislative issues, the president and the board chair.  

The board heard public input from the following people:

  • Jonathan Patterson spoke about his student experience at NMC and the UC
  • Dance instructor Dorothy Eisenstein spoke about upcoming events and support of the arts
  • Instructor Susan Odgers spoke her role on a panel related to housing issues and accessibility
  • Instructor Jerry Cannon spoke about innovation at NMC
  • Attorney Marcelo Betti spoke about his experience as an NMC and UC student    

Trustees approved the consent items which included the minutes from the October meeting.

The board approved the following action items:

  • New Power systems Major of the BSMT
  • Harbor consultant contract with K&L Gates
  • NMC Foundation bylaws
  • NMC/NMC Foundation MOU
  • Board policies on NMC Mission and Vision

The Board then entered into closed session with legal counsel for updates on collective bargaining.
