Marty was born and raised in upstate New York. After earning his bachelor’s degree in economics from St. Lawrence University he worked in commercial banking. He left that field to attend Great Lakes Maritime Academy. Marty is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed Great Lakes Mate, First Class Pilot, and Chief Engineer. He is also currently a strategic sealift officer in the navy reserve with the rank of captain. Marty and his wife Barb have three adult children.
