TRAVERSE CITY — NMC received double good news last week, with announcements of both state and federal grant dollars to expand college programs.
On Feb. 24 NMC learned it will receive the largest program equipment grant in college history from the state of Michigan: $2.07 million for Engineering Technology, Marine Technology, Welding Technology, Nursing and Computer Information Technology programs. NMC is one of 18 community colleges around the state to share $50 million in skilled trade equipment funds. Gov. Rick Snyder said the program represents “an effort to help close a talent gap and meet a demand for good-paying jobs.”
NMC will match 25 percent of the grant funds, or $697,061, to bring the total cost to $2.77 million.
“This investment by both the state and NMC is substantial, and indicative of the significant role community colleges play in their local economies,” said NMC President Timothy J. Nelson.
In addition, the Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center last week also received approval for $2 million in new federal funding, to be spent statewide. As the northern office of the MMTC, which provides training and other services to help businesses grow and improve, NMC’s Training Services division expects to see at least $75,000 starting July 1. More details will be available as that date approaches.
